You can see flowers for a lifetime, but to truly realize their beauty, you must reveal their most intimate crevices, drink in the depth of their color, be seduced by their intoxicating scent and power.
To render their imagery, I look closely at what gives them life.
The intent here is not to imitate nature, but to expose nature in all its glory.
Vangelis’ Ode to flowers
(written for Art World News):
As the curtain of day opens,
The edges of light reveal the aura of the blossom,
The play between light and shadow,
At once the dance of color, light, space, and time begins.
The transformational qualities of color and light have always fascinated me.
They can alter your mood, heighten your senses, and touch your soul. My work is a study of the play of light and color in nature, which provides me with an endless palette of colors to work with.
In my Natural Exposure Series, I look deep into the heart of a flower, and discover the subtle nuances of color that are layered within the textures of its surface.
The temperature, intensity, and direction of light hide or reveal its inner mysteries.
Throughout the life cycle of a blossom different textures emerge within the contours of the surfaces.
The framed floral fragments assume an identity of their own - and my fights of fancy begin. Fantasies are created that become metaphors for aspects of human existence.
The collectors and the viewers interpret my paintings their own way. They view them according to their own expectations, their experiences, and how they look at life.
I am no mystic; I am not creating a new religion. It is dangerous to think you are a special being.
It is simply that the flower to me is the ultimate subject.
When I painted the first flower, that was it.
That was when I discovered color.
Can you imagine this world without color?
To close your eyes for a split second and imagine everything gray...
It would be terrifying. And color comes from flowers.
So no one can ever dispute the value of a flower.
We tend to take them, along with the real things in life, for granted.
